We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Tony Dungy. In fact, several months ago, we read his book entitled "The Mentor Leader - Secrets to Building People and Teams that Win Consistently." You may remember that in 2007, Tony Dungy led the Indianapolis Colts to a Superbowl victory. Hallelujah!
In a brief section of his book, he spoke about one of the responsibilities of being a mentor leader is the continuing process of being equipped. He spoke not only about the importance of being equipped through our mind-set - in other words, mental clarity and readiness; but, he also spoke about the importance of being equipped with the tools needed for the task ahead - physical strength and readiness. Another way this might be better understood is that what we think about will eventually exhibit itself through our words and actions.
He went on to say that when his team was behind in a football game and panic started to set in, he would remember what his Dad had told him as he was growing up. He would, in turn, recite the exact same sentiment to his players and coaching staff - which was: "Leaving the game plan is a sign of panic, and panic is not in our game plan."
In Job 3:25, Job said, "For the thing which I greatly feared has come upon me, and that which I was afraid of has come unto me." While Job was a righteous man and would not speak evil of God, he did open the door to the enemy to work in his life through his thoughts of fear. To put it another way, Job left the game plan.
The first nine words in the scripture referenced above undoubtedly tell us that God knows the plans which He has for us. With that reassurance settled, we would like to ask you a few questions. (We have provided the answer for you, so be confident as you read and respond to each question).
Ready? Set? Here we grow:
What do you do when fear tries to set in?
Go back to the game plan!
What do you do when worry tries to overtake you?
Go back to the game plan!
What do you do when you start to feel anxious about something?
Go back to the game plan!
What do you do when something starts to threaten your well-being? Come on now, you know the words: GO BACK TO THE GAME PLAN!!!
If we believe that God knows the plans (and He does), then we can confidently do an about face if we have deviated from His game plan and get back on track. We can go back to God's blueprint to find out what we are supposed to be doing and pick up from the point where we left off. That is what Job did and we can do it too.
As God's humbled servants, we can be encouraged because God allows U-turns!
If you need to go back to the game plan, please know that God is waiting fo you with open arms. He will even meet you halfway and be ready to joyfully say:
"Welcome Home, Dear One, Welcome Home!"
